He designed the clothes worn by Monica Vitti in Michelangelo Antonioni's film La Notte in 1960, while Jackie Kennedy wore his clothes for several years in the 1960s."

The signature red dress, first seen in his Fiesta tulle, became emblematic and is recognised by Pantone. He retired in 2007 after a final couture show featuring red dresses.
