Marc-André ter Stegen has been left out of Germany’s World Cup 2026 squad. The omission follows his hamstring injury and subsequent surgery after he moved to Girona on loan in January to play regularly. He has not returned to action since the operation, so he is not included in the tournament squad. Julian Nagelsmann selected Oliver Maumann, Manuel Neuer, and Alexander Nübel as the three goalkeepers. The decision also reflects uncertainty about ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona. Barcelona are reportedly looking to reduce the wage bill because he does not appear to fit the club’s plans. Joan García is Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper, with Wojciech Szczęsny as backup, and other options are expected to return from loans in summer.
"The decision comes amid uncertainty over Ter Stegen's future. Barcelona are reportedly eager to get the stopper off the wage bill as he doesn't look to be part of the club's plans. Joan Garcia is Barca's undisputed No. 1, with Wojciech Szczęsny acting as his back-up."
"Barca have also have Diego Kochen coming through the ranks, while Inaki Pena and Áron Yaakobishvili are both due back from loans in the summer."
