Joan Laporta returned to the FC Barcelona presidency in 2021 and immediately addressed the managerial situation with Ronald Koeman in charge. Laporta acknowledged Koeman's legendary status yet concluded Koeman was not the right fit for the new sporting project. Laporta had sought Hansi Flick as his preferred coach, but Flick was unavailable while coaching Germany. Laporta allowed Koeman to continue temporarily before dismissing him after a defeat to Rayo Vallecano in October. Xavi Hernández replaced Koeman, brought renewed impetus to the sporting project, and time later eased tensions between Laporta and Koeman.
