LaLiga president Javier Tebas has intensified his criticism of FIFA's expanded Club World Cup, labeling it as 'completely absurd.' He stated his goal is to eliminate the tournament from the football calendar altogether, arguing it disrupts the existing ecosystem of national leagues in Europe. During a recent event, he expressed concern over the financial implications of the competition, describing the matches as lacking intensity and comparing them to preseason friendlies. Tebas insists the tournament should revert to its previous format, played over a single weekend, due to scheduling conflicts and the saturation of football competitions.
My objective is that there will be no more Club World Cups, I'm very clear about that. There is no room for it.
The model affects the entire ecosystem of national leagues, especially in Europe, and there's no more money in the world of audiovisual rights.
We have to maintain the ecosystem we have already and eliminate it. Keep the Club World Cup as it was before, when it was played basically over one weekend.
I saw a bit of the Chelsea game and it looked like a preseason friendly.
