"Once a year it seems to us like a way to promote the competition and, in addition, it is a way of having respect for the fans that we have all over the world."
"What needs to be done is to regulate it. One game per league, and that way no one would have any problems, and it would help all the competition we're facing from all the American leagues."
"For me, Europe is an amazing continent. We're full of American fast food, we don't have a single European technology company. And we have something good, which is football, and we say, 'Let's not play a game that breaks with tradition.'"
La Liga will stage Barcelona versus Villarreal in Miami later this year as the first La Liga match played overseas. La Liga president Javier Tebas has driven the proposal and both participating clubs agreed, citing financial benefits. Several other La Liga clubs, including Real Madrid, have opposed the move as unfair and a threat to competition integrity. Tebas proposes regulatory changes to allow one overseas game per season to promote the competition and respect international fans. Tebas frames the idea as cultural exchange, arguing Europe has borrowed much from the United States and should share football in return.
