Girona director reveals how Deco blocked their January pursuit of Barcelona starlet | Barca Universal
"I believe we were interested in Bernal because we needed a player for that position. Deco was very honest and told me that it would not be easy to sign him,"
"If they saw that they were signing players and he wasn't getting any playing time, then perhaps he would leave. But if he stays at Barça, it's because they see that he can get significant playing time,"
Girona pursued a January loan for 18-year-old Marc Bernal from FC Barcelona while also securing Marc-Andre ter Stegen on loan. Barcelona director Deco played a central part in preventing Bernal’s departure. Bernal had limited minutes after returning from an ACL injury, but Pedri’s injury and Pedro Fernández’s exit closed the door on a loan. Hansi Flick insisted on keeping Bernal and has given him regular minutes. Bernal started against Albacete, played over 60 minutes alongside Frenkie de Jong, and remains trusted by the manager despite areas identified for improvement.
