"After a two-and-a-half-year wait, Barcelona are finally set to return to their iconic Spotify Camp Nou this coming weekend, when they take on Athletic Club in La Liga. The club confirmed the same in a statement earlier in the day, having now received the green light from the Barcelona City Council and La Liga. "This decision comes after obtaining the first occupancy license corresponding to Phase 1B, which allows increasing the capacity up to 45,401 spectators. "This authorisation includes the entire Lateral area and adds to the license already granted for Phase 1A, which covers the Tribune and South Goal," the club confirmed."
"UEFA regulations do not allow a single club to have multiple home venues in the same round of the competition. Barcelona, in this case, are facing a hurdle as they have already played at Montjuic. However, the club argue that they did not switch stadiums to gain an advantage and the change was due to force majeure - the construction work. The approval of 45,000 plus spectators is also important it makes Camp Nou eligible to host a Champions League encounter."
Barcelona will return to Spotify Camp Nou after a two-and-a-half-year absence to face Athletic Club, following approval from Barcelona City Council and La Liga. The first occupancy license for Phase 1B allows capacity to rise to 45,401 spectators and includes the entire Lateral area, adding to the license for Phase 1A that covers the Tribune and South Goal. Barcelona are seeking UEFA approval to host Champions League matches at Camp Nou, including fixtures on December 9 and January 28. UEFA rules restrict multiple home venues in the same round, and Barcelona cite force majeure due to construction. If UEFA denies approval, the matches will be held at Montjuic.
