The Spanish Super Cup semi-final between Athletic Club and Barcelona has attracted attention because of the goalkeeper duel between Unai Simon and Joan Garcia and the wider debate over Spain's No.1. Ernesto Valverde stated that the subject has not arisen internally and that he has not spoken to Garcia about rival goalkeepers at other clubs. Valverde emphasised that external narratives and public debate should not affect a goalkeeper's performance and that one strong performance by a keeper should not influence another. Joan Garcia has yet to be called up by Spain but is reported to be on the national radar.
