GLL, operating 'Better' leisure centres, is collaborating with NHS England on a four-week project to enhance breast cancer screening attendance among hard-to-reach women in Croydon and Lewisham. The initiative involves fitness instructors encouraging participation through discussions in classes and providing wallet cards with information. This pilot targets demographics like younger women and those in deprivation, aiming to address low screening uptake post-pandemic. If successful, it will expand nationally in Autumn 2025 as part of a broader NHS awareness campaign.
Breast screening has been proven to save lives, yet attendance levels for this free NHS service remain lower than before the pandemic.
If 80% of eligible women attended next year, more than 7,500 additional breast cancers could be identified at an earlier and more treatable stage.
