Laundry can feel relentless, with clean items quickly becoming dirty again. Experts suggest that washing frequency varies based on individual habits, health, and how much skin contact textiles have. Bed linens should be washed weekly, as they absorb sweat, body oils, and dead skin while you sleep. Other items, like duvet covers, require less frequent washing depending on their contact level. Personal circumstances such as allergies or excessive sweating can also dictate laundry needs.
"Dirt, skin, sweat and sebum are all invisible. Just because you can't see dirt doesn't mean it's clean," says Melissa Pateras, laundry expert.
"What I do and what other people do might be two different things," Williamson says, emphasizing the need for personalized washing schedules.
"Flat sheets, fitted sheets and pillow cases should be washed once a week because they're touching your body every single night for eight hours," says Melissa Maker.
"If you sweat a lot when you sleep or have aggressive allergies, you may need to wash bed linens more frequently," states Lori Williamson.
