Kindergarten students at Whittier Elementary School are engaging with food and gardening as part of their curriculum through the FRESHFARM Foodprints program. The children are excitedly learning about growing vegetables like arugula and developing social skills as they interact with nature. This program, established in 2009, extends beyond basic gardening; it integrates lessons across various subjects such as language arts and math, fostering a comprehensive educational experience. By involving around 7,000 kids, FRESHFARM is promoting not just academic growth but also emotional and social learning through active participation in the garden.
The program began developing in 2005 when FRESHFARM, a D.C.-based organization that focuses on agriculture and food access, received a grant to create an educational program.
Rebecca Helgerson lifted up a white sheet that covered a bed of arugula outside of Whittier Elementary School in the Brightwood neighborhood.
