Uber is partnering with Chinese company WeRide to launch robotaxis in 15 international cities over the next five years. This collaboration aims to enhance WeRide's autonomous vehicle development, leveraging Uber's resources to tackle complex driving scenarios, often referred to as 'long-tail problems'. WeRideâs CEO emphasized the importance of scale in resolving these challenges. Interestingly, the robotaxi service wonât be available in the US, with a targeted focus on Europe and the Middle East, where safety and operational efficiency can be tested without prior accidents in its extensive operational history.
"Uber's scale is very important. There are some long-tail problems, you have to have the scalability in order to find them," Tony Han told Business Insider.
"This will just convince people that taking WeRide's products and robotaxi service is safe. And our goal is to make robotaxi safer than a human driver," said Han.
