Trump's Aggression Sours Europe on US Cloud Giants
Briefly

In response to growing privacy concerns and political factors, some European firms like SkunkWerks and Medicusdata are transitioning their data infrastructure from US providers to European ones. Founder Dave Cottlehuber emphasizes the importance of respecting privacy as a right and seeks to distance his company from US political contributions. At the same time, Medicusdata's CEO Steffen Schmidt notes an increase in client demand for using native European cloud services. However, AWS disputes claims of mass migration from US to EU providers, asserting customer control over their data encryption and storage.
"First and foremost, it's about values... privacy is a right not a privilege," Cottlehuber says.
"Since the beginning of 2025, in addition to data residency guarantees, customers have actively asked us to use cloud providers that are natively European companies," Schmidt says.
Staight says the membership of the PCLOB does not impact the agreements around EU-US data sharing and that the CLOUD Act has additional safeguards for cloud content.
"The best thing I can do is to remove that small contribution of mine, and also at the same time, make sure that my customers' privacy is respected and preserved," Cottlehuber says.
