Meta has notified the Irish government that it plans to reduce headcount at its Dublin-based European headquarters. The company employs about 1,800 people there and intends to cut overall workforce by 10%. Meta has not issued a public statement about the Irish base. The company has already reduced Irish staffing by nearly 40% over the past four years, citing economic factors and AI progress. Meta says AI can replicate tasks previously requiring larger teams, enabling work to be done by fewer people. Meta reported rising quarterly revenue and profit while planning major AI spending, including training AI on existing workers’ actions and tasks. The proposed cuts align with broader tech layoffs affecting Irish workers, including reductions at other major firms and outsourcing contractors.
"The proposed cuts are part of a wave of tech industry layoffs potentially set to affect thousands of Irish workers. In addition to its own staff reductions and those of Covalen, there have been cuts or proposed cuts at Coinbase, Amazon, Oracle, PayPal and a host of smaller firms."
