Europe must 'get real' on tech sovereignty and stay open, warns industry group
Briefly

Amanda Brock, CEO of OpenUK, emphasized the need for the EU to move beyond isolationist politics regarding technology and focus on global collaboration. In her discussions surrounding Europe’s quest for tech independence, she warned against conflicting notions of sovereignty and the open-source movement. Bulgarian lawmaker Eva Maydell echoed Brock's stance, calling for a clear assessment of Europe's tech strengths, dependencies, and cooperation needs. The urgency for homegrown tech capabilities in AI and cloud computing is amplified amidst global tensions, but experts stress the importance of integrating into international tech ecosystems.
Every time we hear talk of 'sovereignty' from the EU, in the next breath we hear 'open-source'. Yet these two concepts sit in direct conflict, as open-source has global collaboration at its heart.
We need to have a very clear outline plan which, first and foremost, assesses where our strengths are, where we have certain dependencies, and where we need to cooperate.
