TechCrunch's operations in Europe have come to an end as its team was laid off following the acquisition by Regent LP, a private equity firm. Mike Butcher, the long-time editor-at-large, announced his departure after 18 years with the outlet, emphasizing the abrupt nature of the changes. Fellow reporter Romain Dillet echoed similar sentiments, expressing his disagreement with the decision to downsize international coverage, despite a deep respect for his remaining colleagues. The move raises concerns about the future of tech journalism in Europe, particularly for startups.
When I started my career in tech PR back in 2008, Techcrunch Europe was the place to be for founders and investors.
The upshot is that, as of last month, I am no longer writing for TechCrunch.
Regent LP, a private equity firm, acquired TechCrunch and laid off most of the international team.
I strongly disagree with that decision. But I genuinely want this team to succeed because it remains an incredibly talented group of people.
