The European Commission has outlined a plan to eliminate Russian fossil fuels from the EU energy mix by 2027, presented by Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. The plan consists of banning new gas contracts with Russian suppliers by the end of 2025 and a complete phase-out of imports by 2027. Despite this ambitious roadmap, concerns arise due to rising Russian LNG imports and financial stakes, with the EU reportedly spending $26 billion on these fuels in 2024, which has implications for Russia's war efforts in Ukraine.
"We've managed to put together a legislative package that will make sure that we will now get completely rid of Russian gas in our energy mix," Jorgensen told DW.
"It has been very difficult for Europe to exit Russian energy fully," Czyzak told DW.
Despite a decrease in fossil fuel imports from Russia since 2022, Russian LNG imports increased by 18% in 2024, indicating ongoing dependencies.
The EU spent 23 billion ($26 billion) on Russian fossil fuels in 2024, directly contributing to the Kremlin's war budget.
