Negotiations aimed at reuniting Cyprus have remained stalled since 2017. Recent meetings involving UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres indicated some constructive progress on initiatives agreed in March. However, Guterres emphasized that negotiations have not yet resumed, as building confidence and creating beneficial conditions for Cypriots is necessary. The island has been divided since 1974 due to Turkiye's invasion. Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar continues to call for a two-state solution, which Greek Cypriots oppose, fearing continued control by Turkiye over the island.
The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed a desire for more progress in the stalled negotiations regarding the divided island of Cyprus, particularly regarding new border crossings.
In March, the leaders of Cyprus agreed on six initiatives, of which four have shown progress, although Guterres noted the long road ahead towards resolution.
The division of the Mediterranean island dates back to 1974, after Turkiye's invasion post a coup by Greece-backed supporters, leading to mass displacement and deaths.
Ersin Tatar, the Turkish Cypriot leader, continues to push for a two-state solution despite ongoing resistance from Greek Cypriots, who fear losing control of the island.
