'Thin skinned' ministers will no longer be referenced by name during meetings of Wexford County Council
"In the wording of any notice of motion, the name of any minister shall not be included. Instead, the appropriate title of the minister shall be used. This applies to all references within the motion, and where applicable, the full title, such as The Minister for (Department), or The Minister of State for (Department) must be used, ensuring consistency and formality in the motion's language."
""This amendment is designed to disassociate the ministers from the issues we're raising and not have them on the public record," he said. "We're talking about respect, but the ministers should have the respect to reply to the motions we submit in this chamber; the current housing minister has failed to reply to a lot of my motions so far.""
Councillor Anthony Donohue (Fine Gael) proposed an amendment to ban ministers' names from notices of motion, requiring formal ministerial titles instead. The council's protocol committee examined the proposal before it was put to a vote at the January Wexford County Council meeting. Sinn Féin councillors Tom Forde and Aoife Rose O'Brien objected to the change, arguing that removing names would obscure accountability and historical record-keeping. Cllr Forde cited a radio comment from Housing Minister James Browne and said ministers should respond to motions submitted in the chamber. The amendment was passed following the vote.
