"“no viable path to the EU at this stage unless conditions change dramatically.”"
"Shalva Papuashvili accused the bloc of "blackmail," saying that and "pressure on Georgia do not work.""
""A bureaucracy imbued with a hidden political agenda, an arrogant attitude, and disrespect for all countries that do not display blind obedience, attempting to make independent decisions and exercise the sovereign right to govern the state," Papuashvili added."
"Georgia, however, was accused of "serious democratic backsliding" in the EU enlargement report."
An EU assessment concluded Georgia has no viable path to EU accession at this stage unless conditions change dramatically. The assessment attributed the situation to Georgian government policies, including a crackdown on political opponents and a policy shift appearing slanted toward Moscow, which have undermined relations with the 27-member bloc. Georgian parliamentary leaders accused the EU of blackmail, interference, and possessing a hidden political agenda and arrogant attitude toward countries pursuing independent decisions. The annual enlargement report evaluates 10 candidate countries against 33 policy chapters required for accession and noted several candidates could join as early as 2030 if reforms continue. Georgia was specifically accused of serious democratic backsliding and of growing authoritarian tendencies while appearing increasingly Russia-friendly.
