"The presidential race has narrowed, with a number of local authorities deciding not to nominate any potential Independent candidates... and presidential candidates are pulling on their wellies, and hopefully leaving the white trousers at home, for a day at the Ploughing."
Three candidates have been nominated via the Oireachtas route: Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin. Roscommon, Longford, Cork City, Galway City and Dublin City councils opted not to nominate any candidates. Several local authorities declined to put forward independent contenders, narrowing the field of potential independent candidates. Presidential hopefuls attended the Ploughing Championships and campaigned in wellies, intentionally avoiding white trousers. Campaign activity combined rural outreach with an attention to public image. Recent nominations and council decisions have clarified the emerging presidential contest.
