Race for the Aras gets bitter as rivals Connolly and Humphreys trade personal jibes
"Catherine was working for UK banks... and they were repossessing houses. I was working in the credit union, and I was actually helping people to stay in their houses, through what was an extremely, extremely difficult financial situation. Catherine needs to come out and say exactly who she was working for and how many homes were repossessed."
"For a candidate for the presidency to misuse that in the way she has, it's just a new low."
"never tried to make money out of people's misfortune"
An increasingly bitter campaign is focused on a Prime Time TV debate between Heather Humphreys and Catherine Connolly. Humphreys intends to demand answers about Connolly's legal work for banks during the economic crash and asks who she represented and how many homes were repossessed. Humphreys contrasts that role with her credit union work helping people remain in their houses. Connolly condemns the attacks on her character and calls Humphreys' remarks "a new low," saying she has addressed the issue repeatedly. Fine Gael advisers say Humphreys will stop apologising, be forward-looking, and press for accountability while linking Connolly's past work to alleged hypocrisy over repossessions she criticised in the Dáil.
