""It's more like a flying combat system," Christian Molling, a German security expert, told DW."
""Some people, he said, were of the opinion that the \"weakening of this independence,\" which the FCAS project would bring about, \"was not that damaging\" as the mutual dependence of the European partners would compensate for it.""
""once you take this step, there's no going back.""
The Future Combat Air System (FCAS) is the most expensive single defense project in Europe, with projected costs of at least €100 billion. Scheduled to begin operations from 2040, FCAS aims to pair a new European fighter jet with fleets of drones controlled through a European defense cloud to create an integrated "flying combat system." The program seeks to reduce European reliance on US-produced F-35 stealth fighters. Major industrial partners Dassault (France) and Airbus (Germany and Spain) are engaged in a dispute over manufacturing responsibilities. Dassault's CEO warned that transferring such capabilities would irreversibly weaken France's military independence, prompting French and German leadership intervention at a Franco-German defense council meeting.
