The candidates represented a wide cross-section of backgrounds, including a mathematician, two solicitors, an animal rights activist, a peace activist, an artist, an engineer, an entrepreneur and a bus driver. One hopeful was described as an anti-abortionist and another as an angry man in a dark room on his laptop. Delays and technical issues negatively affected the prospects of an Independent hopeful during the proceedings. Attendance and patience among councillors appeared to wane as the roster of speakers continued.
