However, renewed border checks by Germany and Poland are changing the dynamic, with Poland instituting controls in response to Germany's tougher migration stance. Under German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, asylum seekers can be denied entry, a contentious move. Citizens express concerns that these measures will complicate daily life in the border region, with many feeling politically manipulated rather than threatened by migration.
"It's all just a political show, manipulation. We don't feel threatened by migrants who are allegedly being sent back from Germany," says Arkadiusz from Poland.
"It's just going to get more difficult for people living in the border region," adds his wife, Dorota.
"Ohne Grenzen. Bez Granic" translates to "without borders" in both German and Polish, a phrase now overshadowed by renewed border controls.
