The EU ambassador approved a trade deal with four Mercosur countries—Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay—but the agreement still requires European Parliament backing. The Irish Government voted against the deal in its current form, with senior Cabinet figures saying negotiations are not finalised. Irish beef farmers fear that lower-cost Brazilian beef could threaten their exports to Europe. The Irish Farmers Association welcomed the Government's no vote, saying proposed safeguards do not guarantee Brazilian beef will meet EU standards. Independent Ireland organised a large tractor protest in Athlone, causing warned traffic delays, and some MEPs pledged to push for a no vote.
