"We are an apolitical organisation campaigning for the inclusion of transitional provisions in the forthcoming law on tightened requirements for Swedish citizenship. It is not asking for the rules to be abolished or made more lenient, only that the rules in force when an applicant submits their application should be the same rules their application is assessed against."
"There are 500 people involved right now to some extent, it's created a community with people from all walks of life, working in all kinds of different sectors in Sweden with different experiences and different nationalities. It's been a fantastic exercise in community-building."
"Around 100,000 people, many of whom applied years ago, are currently in the queue for Swedish citizenship. The group's aim is simple: to campaign in favour of transitional rules for citizenship."
Sweden's government announced plans to tighten citizenship requirements effective June 6th, applying the new rules to all applications including those already in the queue. Fair Transition, an apolitical campaign group founded in February, advocates for transitional provisions in the new law. The organization, created through a petition and grown to approximately 500 members via WhatsApp and website, seeks to ensure applicants are assessed under the rules in effect when they submitted their applications. Around 100,000 people currently await citizenship decisions, many having applied years prior. The group aims not to abolish or soften requirements, but to prevent retroactive application of stricter standards. Fair Transition has generated media coverage and mobilized applicants to contact elected representatives about the issue.
