Armenia reassures visiting Iran leader it will control Azerbaijan corridor
Briefly

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian asserted in Yerevan that governance in the Caucasus should remain local. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized control over a corridor linking Azerbaijan with its exclave, maintaining it under Armenian jurisdiction. This corridor, part of a deal signed in Washington, seeks to connect Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan. Pezeshkian warned against extra-regional intervention, while Iranian officials voiced concerns about potential US interests complicating the regional balance, fearing isolation from Armenia and security threats.
"Governance in the Caucasus region must remain Caucasian; outsourcing the resolution of Caucasus issues to extra-regional forces will complicate it," Pezeshkian stated during his visit.
Pashinyan asserted that roads passing through Armenia will be under Armenian jurisdiction, and security will be handled exclusively by Armenia, not any third country.
The corridor could pave the way for a new rail route from Iran to the Black Sea coast through Armenia, opening new economic perspectives.
Iranian officials have expressed concerns, arguing that the transit route could isolate Iran from Armenia while bringing hostile foreign forces closer to its borders.
