Zelenskyy fires ministers accused of involvement in bribery scheme as public outrage grows
"There must be maximum integrity in the energy sector, in absolutely all processes. I support every investigation carried out by law enforcement and anti-corruption officials. This is an absolutely clear and consistent position for everyone."
"Right now, it is extremely difficult for everyone in Ukraine — enduring power outages, Russian strikes and losses. It is absolutely unacceptable that, amid all this, there are also some [corruption] schemes in the energy sector."
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired justice minister Herman Halushchenko and energy minister Svitlana Grynchuk amid allegations of involvement in a large-scale bribery scheme in the energy sector. Zelenskyy called for personal sanctions against Timur Mindich, an alleged organiser and former business partner. Anti-corruption activists, opposition politicians and army veterans demanded decisive action, including sacking and imprisonment of those personally known to Zelenskyy. Ukraine's national anti-corruption bureau carried out a 15-month investigation into state nuclear energy company Energoatom. Mindich co-founded Kvartal 95 and reportedly fled abroad, possibly to Israel, before investigators searched his Kyiv apartment. Nabu named Mindich among seven suspects in a $100m corruption case. Zelenskyy pledged integrity and accountability in the energy sector amid power outages and wartime pressures.
