UN launches rescue operation after eight migrants die off Djibouti
Briefly

The UN migration agency reported that eight migrants died and 22 others are missing after being forced off a boat by smugglers near Djibouti. This group of 150 migrants attempted to swim ashore after being abandoned. Ongoing searches by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Djibouti authorities aim to locate the missing individuals. Celestine Frantz, the IOM Regional Director, emphasized the tragic nature of lost lives at sea due to unscrupulous smuggling practices, as thousands attempt perilous journeys from Africa and the Middle East to Europe.
"Every life lost at sea is a tragedy that should never happen," Celestine Frantz, the IOM Regional Director for the East, Horn and Southern Africa, said.
Frantz said that the migrants were "forced into impossible choices by smugglers who show no regard for human life."
