Aleksei Navalny died while serving a 19-year sentence in the Polar Wolf prison in Kharp, north of the Arctic Circle. European laboratories detected epibatidine, a toxin derived from South American poison dart frogs, in his samples, indicating poisoning. His mother declared the finding confirmed his murder at a memorial at Borisovskoye cemetery, where dozens gathered and several European diplomatic missions attended. Video showed people laying flowers at his grave. Five European governments said they were confident the toxin was not found naturally in Russia. Former associate Ksenia Fadeyeva urged supporters not to become apathetic and warned that accepting defeat would allow evil to prevail. Fadeyeva learned of his death while detained and was later released in a 2024 prisoner exchange that had originally included Navalny.
