Millions of Ukrainians abroad hope to return home once Russia's invasion ends
Briefly

Iryna Schestova, who originally fled her hometown of Donetsk in 2014, returned to Kyiv after initially seeking refuge in Romania following Russia's 2022 invasion. She currently lives alone, separated from her family due to the war, which has exacerbated the displacement of Ukrainians. Although Ukraine has faced a long-standing issue with population loss, the conflict has intensified this problem. Many Ukrainians, including 43% of those surveyed abroad, express a desire to return home despite the ongoing turmoil and challenges faced.
"Even if I would stay there [in Romania], I didn't know exactly what to do there further. And I decided that it's going to be better for me here not to know what to do yet."
"More than 5 million Ukrainian refugees remain outside the country. In a survey of Ukrainians abroad... 43% of respondents said they would like to return."
