Measles cases in Europe double to reach 25-year high
Briefly

The resurgence of measles in Europe, particularly in Romania and Kazakhstan, reflects a significant public health challenge. In 2023, over 30,000 cases were reported. With half of these cases leading to hospitalizations and a concerning 40% affecting children under five, WHO Europe director Hans Kluge called for intensified vaccination efforts. The pandemic caused a 500,000-child drop in vaccinations, contributing to this outbreak. Measles, highly contagious and capable of severe health outcomes, saw Europe account for a third of global cases in 2024, reversing a previous decline in instances.
