Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, erupted on Monday, sending a large plume of ash and gas into the sky without posing any immediate danger to the public. The eruption involved a pyroclastic flow triggered by a collapse at the Southeast Crater, although it has not reached populated areas. Officials, including Sicily’s president, assured safety, advising tourists to avoid the area due to the potential for further volcanic activity, while operations at Catania airport continue as usual.
The explosive activity transitioned to a lava fountain, while the plume of ash is expected to dissipate towards the south-west, yet there’s no current danger to people.
Experts assured the president of Sicily, Renato Schifani, that there was no danger for the population, as the flow had not reached tourist areas.
