During her visit to New Delhi, EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized strengthening ties with India, highlighting a focus on establishing a defense and security partnership. Indian Prime Minister Modi announced efforts to finalize a mutually beneficial free trade agreement by the year's end, as both parties anticipate consequences from potential US tariffs. Previous negotiations faced setbacks due to disagreements on key issues such as intellectual property and market access. The upcoming talks in March aim to bridge these gaps and enhance bilateral relations.
"We have asked our teams to work out a mutually beneficial bilateral free trade agreement by the end of this year," Modi said.
"Your visit to India has added a new vigour, energy and enthusiasm to our partnership. This visit shall act as the catalyst that will translate our ambition into action," Modi told von der Leyen.
"Brussels sought to strengthen the EU's defense and security partnership with India in light of evolving global dynamics," said von der Leyen.
"With the potential imposition of US tariffs, this agreement is crucial for both parties to safeguard economic interests," an EU official stated.
