Taoiseach Micheál Martin had a significant conversation with Ursula von der Leyen regarding the looming threat of US tariffs on Irish exports, particularly in food, drink, and pharmaceuticals. Amid concerns from Irish ministers about double-digit tariffs, both leaders stressed the necessity for the EU to respond thoughtfully while maintaining competitiveness. Von der Leyen criticized the tariffs as detrimental to businesses and consumers, asserting the EU's commitment to protect its interests and seek negotiated solutions amidst anticipated announcements from the US.
We both agreed that the EU should be measured and considered in any response, and focused on our own competitiveness, and an ambitious trade agenda.
As I have said before, tariffs are taxes - bad for businesses, worse for consumers equally in the US and the European Union.
