Why balcony solar panels are booming DW 12/18/2025
"Small solar devices that can be plugged into household sockets are growing ever more popular in the country, with more than a million installed in the last three years. The modules are usually around two square meters in size, with up to four included in a mini system, and easily installed on areas such as balconies, where they work as safely as other household appliances only in reverse."
"The rapidly falling cost of solar power and battery storage is a major climate success story of recent years, helping renewables overtake coal for the first time this year in global electricity generation. These plummeting prices have filtered down to the household level in Germany. The price of solar panel systems for balconies has halved in the last two years, with small models available from around 200 ($233)"
Germany has seen rapid uptake of small plug-in solar devices, with over a million systems installed in three years. Modules are about two square meters and up to four can form a mini-system, suited to balconies and other small areas. Electricity flows from the module through an inverter into the household socket and into the grid, and many systems now include battery storage to save excess power. Falling costs have halved prices in two years, with small systems from about 200 and larger ones with storage under 1,000. Payback is typically four to seven years. Modules can last over 30 years and batteries 10–15 years.
