Why a roadmap to move away from fossil fuels matters DW 11/19/2025
"After releasing a draft pact on Tuesday, Brazil, which holds the COP30 presidency, has been working negotiators through the night, hoping to get the most contentious issues out of the way two days before the conference is due to wrap up. "His willingness to make time in his busy schedule to give new momentum to the COP is tremendously important," EU climate commissioner Wopke Hoekstra said in a statement after meeting with Lula."
"While phasing out fossil fuels was not originally on the official agenda at COP30, the past week has seen political momentum grow around the issue. Colombia is one of the countries spearheading around 80 nations including Germany, Kenya and the UK calling for a roadmap on transitioning away from fossil fuels to be included in the summit's final agreement. Support has emerged from both rich and poor nations from across Europe, Africa, Latin America and the Small Island Developing States."
""People around the world are mobilizing on a massive scale, demanding concrete action for climate justice, particularly against the expansion of fossil fuel," said Irene Velez Torres, Colombia's environment minister, adding that despite being a producer of oil and coal, the country is not granting new exploration contracts. "We have to leave here with a call for a roadmap," she said."
Brazil, holding the COP30 presidency, has released a draft pact and engaged negotiators intensively in Belem to accelerate agreement before the conference ends. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been meeting delegates and prompting overnight negotiations to resolve contentious items. Key disputes include a proposed roadmap to phase out oil, gas and coal, increases in climate finance, and climate-friendly trade measures. Around 80 countries, led by Colombia with support from Germany, Kenya and the UK, are calling for the fossil-fuel phase-out roadmap. Several wealthy and developing nations, plus small island states, have signaled support. Colombia says it will not grant new exploration contracts.
