Laika, a seal pup, was found injured with parasites and fever and gained weight in rehabilitation before release into the North Sea. Black swans on Melbourne's Albert Park lake wear numbered neck collars for a study monitoring movements, behaviour and health. A female capuchin named Maria was shot in Rio de Janeiro, lost leg use and did not survive; dozens of wild animals have been shot in recent years. Mountain gorilla numbers have quadrupled to 1,000 since the 1970s through conservation and shared tourism income. Pelicans gather in St James's Park to preen, while polar bears have occupied an abandoned research station and swiped at a camera drone.
