A coalition of environmental groups and lawmakers has called for stronger plastic pollution regulations in California, urging Governor Gavin Newsom to act. Five months ago, Newsom halted proposed regulations that would reduce plastic waste at the behest of plastics companies. The environmentalists noted that California's landmark law, SB 54, aimed to decrease plastic in packaging and impose recycling costs on companies instead of cities and taxpayers. An attorney from Oceana highlighted the alarming rate at which plastic enters the oceans, underscoring significant environmental concerns.
The oceans are choking on plastic said Tara Brock, an attorney with Oceana. An estimated 33 billion pounds of plastic enter the marine environment each year, equivalent to two garbage trucks dumping plastic into the ocean every minute.
Under industry pressure, the Newsom administration has weakened proposed rules drafted after he signed a landmark law, SB 54, three years ago aimed at reducing plastic use and improving recycling.
