Trump to repeal ruling allowing regulation of planet-heating gases
"In what is set to be its most audacious anti-environment move yet, the Trump administration on Thursday will roll back the mechanism allowing the government to regulate planet-heating pollution, the White House press secretary has told reporters. President Trump will be joined by EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to formalize the recession of the 2009 Obama-era endangerment finding, Karoline Leavitt said at a press conference on Tuesday."
"The finding determined that CO2 and other greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare, establishing a legal basis to regulate them under the Clean Air Act. Its overturning will be a devastating blow to millions of Americans facing growing risks of unnatural disasters, said Meredith Hankins, federal climate legal director at the environmental advocacy non-profit National Resources Defense Council. The Trump EPA is cynically pretending climate change isn't a risk to Americans' health and welfare, said Hankins."
The Trump administration will formally rescind the 2009 endangerment finding that determined CO2 and other greenhouse gases endanger public health and welfare. The rescission removes the legal foundation for regulating planet-heating pollution under the Clean Air Act and is described by officials as the largest deregulatory action in American history. Environmental groups including the NRDC, Environmental Defense Fund, and Earthjustice have vowed legal challenges against the rollback. An EPA spokesperson framed the original finding as harmful to families and businesses. President Trump directed an EPA review of the finding on his first day back in office.
