Trump is slowing - but not stopping - US greenhouse gas reductions
"Alas, fortunes have changed. Following "the most abrupt shift in energy and climate policy in recent memory" during the first seven months of the Trump administration, according to a new Rhodium Group report published today, we can expect a significantly slower pace of progress - a 26-35 percent reduction in emissions over the next decade compared to pollution levels in 2005."
"Former President Joe Biden set a goal of slashing US greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent this decade as part of the nation's commitment to the global Paris climate agreement. The Inflation Reduction Act Biden signed into law in 2022 was projected to get the US most of the way to that goal, with generous tax incentives for carbon pollution-free energy and electric vehicles projected to shrink emissions about 40 percent by 2030."
Rhodium Group projects US greenhouse gas emissions will fall 26-35 percent over the next decade compared to 2005 levels, down sharply from a previous projection of up to 56 percent by 2035. The revision attributes the change to an abrupt shift in energy and climate policy during the first seven months of the Trump administration that has created obstacles for wind and solar and rolled back federal environmental protections. The new outlook falls far short of emissions reductions needed to limit global temperature rise. The Inflation Reduction Act and Biden-era EPA rules had previously been expected to drive substantial emissions declines.
