He added: The way to influence that would be to put a sprinkler system on it that would reduce the risk of individual shoot failure and system failure."
"Adam Cormack, the head of campaigning at the Woodland Trust, said: Ancient trees like the Whitewebbs oak are irreplaceable. It's vital every effort is made to keep what's left alive so it can continue to help wildlife thrive and inspire and educate future generations. Contractors linked to Toby Carvery chainsawed branches off a 500-year-old oak at the edge of a car park in Whitewebbs Park, Enfield, without consulting landowner Enfield council. The unauthorised felling is under investigation by the Forestry Commission and has prompted a legal dispute between Mitchells & Butlers Retail and Enfield council. The trunk has shown signs of re-sprouting and arborists say a sprinkler-and-tank system could support new shoots and preserve the stump. An estimated cost of about 10,000 plus project management was cited. The Woodland Trust urged all efforts to keep the ancient tree alive for wildlife and future generations.
