Tipperary students celebrate winning environmental award for project focusing on sustainable 'bioplastics'
Emma Flannery, Ellie Kinane, and Eadón Roche from Thurles’ Presentation Secondary School won the Junior ECO-Entrepreneurship Award at the National Young Environmentalist Awards 2026 in Dublin. Their project, “Turning the Tide on Plastic,” targets hazards linked to plastic production and examines bioplastic production using Laminaria digitata collected from Spanish Point in Co Clare. The team compared their bioplastics with LDPE, a widely demanded manufactured plastic, using physical property tests. The awards program recognized youth aged 10 to 18 across biodiversity loss, climate change, waste reduction, sustainable transport, and food sustainability. In 2026, 340 projects were submitted from 29 counties, with 110 finalist groups selected after regional ECO-Dens semi-finals. The ceremony at the Royal Dublin Society’s Concert Hall gathered over 1,000 students, teachers, families, community leaders, and policymakers.
