The Empire Wind 1 offshore wind farm, set to power up to half a million homes in New York, has faced a work stoppage ordered by the Trump administration, citing allegations of a rushed approval process. However, this claim contradicts a lengthy review process that began in 2011, including an environmental analysis, lease auction, and comprehensive evaluations concluding in 2023. Experts vehemently dismiss the assertion of haste, highlighting extensive data collection and evaluations that have shaped the project, which aims to advance renewable energy efforts against a backdrop of political contention.
The idea that the review was rushed is just preposterous, says Douglas Nowacek, a professor who had planned to study whales in the area.
From the actual start in 2011, there was just an enormous amount of work and data that was collected over that time to get to the point of actually issuing a record of decision.
