Record snow drought and unprecedented heat are affecting most of the American West. Snow cover and snow depth are at the lowest levels in decades. At least 67 Western weather stations measured their warmest December through early February on record. Normal snow cover this time of year should be about 460,000 square miles, but current snow cover is about 155,000 square miles. Oregon's snowpack is record low and about 30% lower than the previous record. Oregon, Colorado, and Utah report their lowest statewide snowpack since the early 1980s. Ski resorts, water supplies, wildfire risk, and winter recreation are being harmed.
