The $25M plan for a new Berkeley shoreline park
"A year of heated debate and activism has finally coalesced into a new plan for the North Basin Strip, a 20-acre plot of shoreline tucked between Berkeley Meadow and the Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex. The $25 million plan from the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) calls for a promenade with stepped access to the water, new restrooms, a beach, and a mountain-biking area, all on the northern end of the strip near the Bates complex."
"About 50 people filled the room, including birders and hikers who had asked that the district retain the area's existing plants and trees, disability activists who wanted accessible pathways to the shoreline, environmentalists who had campaigned to daylight an underground creek, and a contingent of at least half a dozen 10- to 14-year-old boys who had lobbied for a biking area with ramps and mounds."
"I love this area so much because it's some of my favorite things. I got nature, I got mountain biking, and I love fishing too. And there's almost nobody out here, so it feels a little wilder, said Cypher, a 14-year-old who grew up nearby and spent his childhood picking blackberries, catching leopard sharks, and learning to bike in the North Basin Strip."
A year of local debate and activism produced a $25 million proposal for the 20-acre North Basin Strip between Berkeley Meadow and the Tom Bates Regional Sports Complex. The plan calls for a northern promenade with stepped water access, new restrooms, a beach, and a mountain-biking area, while the southern portion would emphasize walking trails, vegetation preservation, and habitat for birds and pollinators. The East Bay Regional Park District and design firm WRT presented the plan at a Nov. 19 public meeting attended by about 50 residents, including birders, disability advocates, environmentalists, and youth bikers.
