Tesla Megapacks arrive for massive battery replacing coal plant
Briefly

The Stanwell Battery Project in Queensland is receiving its first Tesla Megapacks as construction begins on a large-scale battery energy storage system. This system will incorporate 324 Megapack units, which will enable the storage and discharge of 300 MW of energy for four hours, totaling 1,200 MWh. The initiative aims to enhance energy diversification and replace the nearby Stanwell coal plant, which is set to be deactivated in 2026, aligning with the government's renewable energy goals for 2035. Initial operations are expected to commence by November 2025, fully online by May 2027, creating around 80 jobs during the process.
The Stanwell Battery Project aims to support a huge battery energy storage system with 324 Tesla Megapack units, delivering 300MW of energy for up to four hours.
Angie Zahra stated that the Stanwell Battery is part of a broader diversification to include cleaner energy solutions, contributing to an overall 800 MW of battery storage capacity.
The project is anticipated to be fully operational by May 2027, with the initial commissioning of the Megapacks targeting November 2025.
The Stanwell coal plant's shutdown is part of a government initiative aiming for an 80 percent renewable energy generation ratio by 2035.
