A sand and gravel quarry had been proposed for 2,300 acres southwest of Gilroy. POST's acquisition will protect the space as a wildlife corridor and cultural site. Gordon Clark, president of the land trust, said buying the property had been a goal for twenty years because of its ecological importance. POST now owns over 6,000 of the 6,500-acre property and plans to buy the remainder this year. The land, known to the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band as Juristac, holds spiritual significance; Chairman Ed Ketchum said the area hasn't been open to them for 200 years and they look forward to exploring it. The Exploratorium is exhibiting live human heart cells beating under a microscope, with senior researcher Amanda Marywhether noting visitors can see stem cells differentiated into heart cells and interact with them.
