""The return of 16 acres of land at the headwaters of Sausal Creek allows the return of our sacred relationship with our ancestral land,""
""The water is clear and surrounded by oaks, bay laurel, toyon, madrone, soap root, and many other important native plants. We are honored to regain stewardship of this important area and will protect it for the next seven generations.""
""heal the land and heal the scars that have been created by colonization for the next seven generations.""
Oakland City Council voted unanimously to allocate up to $843,875 from Measure DD to the Sogorea Te' Land Trust for a 16-acre purchase on Blachford Court in the Piedmont Pines neighborhood. The tree-covered property includes native plants and Cobbledick Creek, a tributary of Sausal Creek. Sausal Creek flows about three miles from Joaquin Miller Park through Dimond Park into Fruitvale before reaching the San Francisco Bay. The land trust is indigenous and women-led and emphasizes stewardship and long-term protection. Oakland previously granted a cultural conservation easement for roughly 3.8 acres in Joaquin Miller Park to the land trust, enabling restoration and a CalFire fuel reduction partnership.
